ITINERARY
Arrival/introduction
— A Backcountry Safaris host will meet you at the Anchorage International Airport and transport you to your hotel. We leave you to unpack and let you pause for a break before picking you up for dinner and a pre-trip planning orientation. After dinner, we can visit stores to get any last-minute personal items you may need and tour downtown Anchorage.

Day 1 — Fly to King Salmon: Our trip begins as we fly by bush plane to Lake Grosvenor. We set up camp then venture out by boat and on foot to explore this region. Fishermen in our group will want to cast a line and try to land some of the area's abundant large and feisty rainbow trout.

Day 2 — Bear viewing: The water turns to milky gray as we leave the Grosvenor Lake and paddle the braided waters of the Savonoski River. We may catch a glimpse of Tundra swans nesting in the area. The pace of the river quickens as we enter prime brown bear habitat on the Savonoski.

Day 3 — Naknek lake (Iliuk Arm): The rushing waters of the Savonoski carry us into Iliuk Arm as we make our way for a 20-mile paddle to Brooks Camp. We'll keep watch along shoreline looking for bears that frequent the area.

Day 4 — Naknek Lake: Hike up Margot Creek to view and photograph bears.

Day 5 — Brooks Camp: We'll view the world famous brown bears of Katmai as they fish for salmon leaping up Brooks Falls. This is the site of Alaskan brown bear images seen around the world on magazine covers and in nature films. We'll spend most of a day looking for some of the the 40 to 60 bears that congregate in the Brooks Camp area. Bring lots of film for this incredible opportunity to photograph bears in close view as they clinch salmon in their paws and gnash their mighty teeth into their prey.

Day 6 — Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes: We finish our trip with a visit to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Our trip by van will take us to the barren moonscape lands laid to ruin during the cataclysmic eruption of Novarupta Volcano in 1912. The eruption was the largest volcanic explosion of the 20th Century. The valley gets its name from numerous steam vents once found throughout this ashy region in the aftermath of the eruption.

Day 7 — Fly back to Anchorage
