run of sockeye salmon up the Naknek River creates an ideal feast for brown
bears - attracting more than 2,000 of the bruins to the lands of Katmai
National Park and Preserve. This is one of the world's premier brown bear
viewing trips.
We provide you with a dry suit. We are the only Seward kayaking company to provide you with a dry suit to keep you warm, dry, and to protect you from hypothermia.
We provide Pogies, sea kayaking gloves to keep you hands warm.
We provide you with a rain hat to keep your head dry in the rain.

Our experienced naturalist sea kayaking guides will lead you out of Seward along the west shoreline of the scenic Resurrection Bay. The bay is surrounded by snow covered mountains with hanging glaciers coming off the tops. Along the way your guide will point out points of interest and tell you about bay’s history and about the wildlife we encounter.
You need no prior sea kayaking paddling experience. Your Resurrection Bay sea kayaking adventure starts with kayaking instruction from our expert guides. Within minutes our guides will have you paddling. You'll be surprised as to how stable sea kayaks are in the water. We provide you with a paddling dry suit, sea kayaking gloves and a rain hat for your safety, protection against hypothermia and to keep you warm and dry.
We offer local hotel pickup. Backcountry Safaris will start picking guest up at local hotels about 15 minutes before departure time and then a short drive takes us out to Lowell point where this adventure begins.
We often see sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, seabirds, bald eagles, jumping salmon and occasionally we see whales that venture into the bay.
Out path will take us out along Caines Head State Recreation Area and towards Tonsina Creek. Depending on the group’s speed and what wildlife we encounter along the way, we may make it all the way out to Tonsina Creek. If the tides are high it may be possible to paddle up the creek a short way to see spawning salmon during spawning season.
About halfway into the trip we will make a quick shoreline stop for hot drinks and a snack that we provide.
If you are an early riser the morning trip normally offers calmer water and is the best time for taking younger kids (8 and older).
The afternoon trips are typically windier. Resurrection Bay normally gets an afternoon wind.
The winds have normally calmed down in time for our evening trips and this is another good time for families with children 8 years and up to participate.
ITINERARY A Backcountry Safaris host will pick you up at your hotel about 15 minutes prior to departure time.
After arriving at Lowell Point our guides will outfit you with a dry suit, boots, gloves, rain hat, and life jacket. We will also provide a dry bag for your camera if needed.
After a short kayaking instructions from our guides we will head out to explore Resurrection Bay. About halfway into the trip we will make a quick stop on the beach for you to stretch your legs and for hot drinks and a snack.
After returning our host will return you to your hotel, say goodbye and wish you good journeys on the rest of your Seward adventures.
Getting To Seward
Seward, Alaska is just 125 miles south of Anchorage. You can reach Seward by road or Backcountry Safaris would be happy to package bus or Alaska Railroad transportation to Seward as well as overnight lodging in Seward.

Although every precaution is taken to safeguard you and your belongings, our adventure trips involve inherent risks and dangers which are beyond our control and Backcountry Safaris shall assume no responsibility for personal injuries or deaths and loss of personal property. We highly recommend that you consider purchasing travel insurance. Travel insurance coverage can help with expenses for the unforeseeable such as lost baggage trip delays, emergency evacuation, and cancellation due to illness.
We use independent contractors to supply Backcountry Safaris with various services on many of our adventures. Some trips require us to use independent tour guides, drivers, lodges and hotels, air and water taxis, and other suppliers. Because we do not own, operate, manage, control, or supervise these suppliers, we cannot be liable for any acts or omissions on their part, including any negligence, gross negligence, or reckless or willful acts. Backcountry Safaris assumes no responsibility for any injury, loss, damage, delay, or death to person or property arising from the negligent or willful act or failure to act of any person who is to or does provide goods or services for this trip or for the action or inaction of any other third party. Resurrection Bay's Name Resurrection Bay received its name from Russian Alexandr Baranov, who was forced to retreat into the bay during a bad storm in the Gulf of Alaska. When the storm settled it was Easter Sunday, so the bay and nearby Resurrection River were named in honor of it.

Ship Building Resurrection Bay was the site of one of the first ship building yards in Alaska. The ship yard was established 1793 by Russian Alexandr Baranov.

In The Movies
The opening of the film The Hunt for Red October was filmed in Resurrection Bay, with the bay serving as a stand-in for Russia's Murmansk Fjord.

Historical Trails
The famous historical Iditarod trail begins at the head of Resurrection Bay in Seward.

World War II There are two old gun battery emplacements at Resurrection Bay's entrance. They were put in place to protect the ice-free bay from the invading Japanese Army during World War II.

Fox Island
Fox Island at the entrance to Resurrection Bay was originally named Renard Island; brothers Alfred and William (Billy) Lowell established a fox farm on the island in 1901. They started with three blue fox pairs and by 1904 had about 250 foxes on the Island.

Lowell Family
The Lowell family was one of earliest to settle in Seward. There are many points around Resurrection Bay and Seward that commemorates the Lowell family such as Lowell Canyon, Lowell Creek, Mt. Alice, Mt. Eva, Lowell Point, and Lowell Glacier.
